Company Profile

Uitenhage Super Steel (USS) is located in the hub of the automotive industry of the Nelson Mandela Metro. Since 1972, the company has developed an enviable reputation in the manufacturing and erecting of structural steel.

The USS facility has expanded in the past 5 years to include:

  • Fabrication Area: 6 000 m ²
  • Plate Girder workshop: 1 000 m 2
  • Material Store Area: 850 m²
  • Paint Shop: 1 300 m²
  • Mechanical Workshop: 425 m²

A commitment to quality and customer services has contributed to the introduction of latest technology to support the design, manufacturing and erecting process and thereby offering a comprehensive service to customers. The workshop technology includes Peddinghaus CNC beam drilling machines, angle masters and a plate processor. The welding process and procedures is guided by a welding book that complies with the requirements of the AWS D1.1 standard.

A fully equipped drawing office use TEKLA to support the design, issue of workshop drawings and the quality control in manufacturing process. TEKLA reports provide an integrated management system that assists the project team to plan and track the project progress in a professional manner.

In 2014, Uitenhage Super Steel installed and commissioned a Plate Beam Welding Machine at their manufacturing facility in Uitenhage in order to offer their clients a more versatile range of structural steel products. The Beam Welding Machine creates the possibility for USS to deliver customer specific plate girders, plate beams, tapered beams and box beams that allow for greater flexibility in the design and construction of buildings.

Uitenhage Super Steel has an established paint application system that is controlled and documented during each element of the application system. The paint shop is a 1 300 m² in- door facility with airless spraying technology to minimize the impact of weather on the delivery schedule of the steel. All protective coating is completed as per the client specifications which is documented within the Project Quality Control Plan (QCP).

The continuous commitment to ensure quality and customer satisfaction is driven by a Quality Management System that meets all the requirements of ISO 9001:2008. A comprehensive electronic data book presents the conclusion of all USS projects when the client receives all documentation that is required for engineer compliance. Within the Quality Management System, USS strives to develop a reputation as a preferred employer. This includes meeting all legislative requirements and as well as health and safety standards in the workshop and on the project sites.

An extended fleet is available to ensure effective transport of products as well as supporting the erecting process. This ensures that steel can be delivered to the designated site with efficiency. The erecting crew has access to a crane fleet that includes 12 mobile, rough terrain cranes ranging from 8 ton to 90 ton. The fleet also include two spider crane that are ideal for cramped spaces and areas where we have to install steel on concrete slaps. The 2.9 ton and 4 ton spider cranes have rubber tracks which is ideal to ride on any surface from ground, concrete and even tiles.
